“I am a citizen of horizons…
A citizen with no homeland…
What I do: I travel…
My hometown: all the cities…” Majed Amin
Voices New Zealand’s latest concert programme takes audiences on a journey, a quest for a new homeland. This quest is real for millions of people every day, every week, every year; the need to leave a home, a country, their memories behind.
This concert will tell stories through music and poetry, music from the East, the oceans and the mountains, music from our world. Following our guide – actor Nathaniel Lees – the sounds of the drums and the songs of the seekers of a new home singing of horizons and hope, audiences will meander with the artists throughout the space encountering different worlds and cultures. Not everything will go well, but there is always hope.
In this immersive concert setting audiences are invited to promenade throughout the performances, as if on a bustling marketplace (or pick a resting spot on some of the chairs provided).
Featuring the world-premiere of Huwiyati Muhajer (Citizens of Horizons) by Palestinian Jordanian artist and composer Shireen Abu-Khader, alongside works by Ériks Ešenvalds, Bob Chilcott, Antonín Dvořák and Aotearoa composers Rosa Elliott and Takerei Komene, Horizons is a concert journey you will not want to miss.
