Conducting Internship 2020 'Pilot'

The VOICES New Zealand (VOICES) Conducting Internship aims to provide high-level insights for early to mid-career conductors who aspire to reach the next level of their craft. The candidates can come from either a choral or orchestral background. 2020 is the pilot for this new programme which will evolve over time.

Successful interns will be invited to attend all Auckland-based rehearsals of VOICES, observe Artistic and Music Director Karen Grylls at work and receive some one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring includes an introduction meeting/briefing with the MD before a project and follow-ups afterwards.

The mentoring sessions will aim to develop their musicianship as well as conducting techniques and ability to work with ensembles. The internship is designed to expose the intern to the workings of a professional chamber choir.

Interns will be required to submit a report on their experience at the end of the internship.

This internship is free to the successful applicant and is not remunerated.

Application Criteria:

  • There is no age restriction for Applicants
  • Preference is given to applicants who are early to mid-career conductors
  • Applicants need to be available for a minimum of 50% of the projects in the year (there are about 15 rehearsal dates as per attached draft schedule, predominantly on weekends).
  • Applicants need to be New Zealand based.

Complete the application form and submit with the following supporting documents:

  • Cover letter of no more than one page, stating why you are applying and how the internship will benefit you
  • CV outlining your musical and academic achievements
  • Two References:
    1. List the names and contact details of two professional (Music) references in support of your application
  • An audiovisual recording or YouTube link of yourself conducting Duration max 10 minutes.

Vocal Coaching Internship 2020 'Pilot'

The VOICES New Zealand (VOICES) Vocal Coaching Internship aims to provide high-level insights for early to mid-career vocal coaches who aspire to reach the next level of their craft. The candidates can come from either a choral or operatic or other solo singing background. 2020 is the pilot for this new programme which will evolve over time.

Successful interns will be invited to attend all Auckland-based rehearsals of VOICES, observe the Voices’ professional Vocal Coach at work and receive some one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring includes an introduction meeting/briefing with the Vocal Coach before a project and follow-ups afterwards.

The mentoring sessions will aim to further develop their understanding of voice technique and how to translate the knowledge to a singer or ensemble. The internship is designed to expose the intern to the workings of a professional chamber choir.
